Two children and one adult were killed Thursday when a car struck a group of cyclists on a provincial road near Vogelwaarde in the rural southern Netherlands. Four additional children were seriously injured in the same incident. The victims were part of a group of 14 schoolchildren and two chaperones on a school camping trip, the Zeeland Security Region organization said in a statement.
The injured children were taken to hospitals in the Netherlands and nearby Belgium for treatment. The incident occurred on a provincial road running between farmers' fields near the town of Vogelwaarde, some 200 kilometers (125 miles) south of Amsterdam. A photograph published in Dutch media showed a car with a smashed windshield and damaged hood in a field next to the road.
