Cardinals Edge Braves 2-1 on Eighth-Inning Home Run

Jimmy Crooks hit a go-ahead solo home run in the eighth inning as the St. Louis Cardinals edged the Atlanta Braves 2-1 on Friday in St. Louis. Crooks connected off Atlanta reliever Danny Young, who entered the game with a 0-1 record, for his second home run of the season.
The blast came after a rain delay of nearly three hours that halted play in the top of the fourth inning. Kyle Leahy threw three scoreless innings for the Cardinals before the delay, allowing one hit and striking out two. He was replaced by George Soriano after the stoppage.
JoJo Romero pitched a perfect eighth inning to earn the win and improve to 1-2. First-time All-Star Riley O'Brien recorded his 23rd save in 27 opportunities. Chris Sale started for Atlanta and worked three scoreless innings, allowing two hits while striking out five and walking one.
Victor Mederos followed with two scoreless innings in relief. The Braves managed just three hits total. Austin Riley delivered the Braves' only run with an RBI single in the fifth inning. Blaze Jordan hit a one-out double in the third for the game's first extra-base hit.
The Cardinals bullpen retired the final seven Atlanta batters in order.
