Crooks, 24, appeared in 39 games at Triple-A this season and hit .262 with 13 home runs and 29 RBIs. He played 15 games with the Cardinals late last season and hit .133. Velazquez appeared in 40 games at Triple-A and hit .232 with seven home runs and 22 RBIs. He hit .357 with four home runs in 15 spring training games.
The promotions give the Cardinals three catchers on the roster.
Crooks joins Ivan Herrera and Pedro Pages. A manager said Crooks will receive significant playing time. "Crooks will have a decent amount of catching," the manager said. "He's definitely here to play."
