Theft of electronics and data-center components rose sharply as demand for AI infrastructure expanded. Industry analysts link the increase to organized crime rings targeting high-value shipments for resale abroad.
theregister.comCargo theft involving AI hardware generated $132 million in losses during the first three months of 2026, according to data analytics firm Verisk CargoNet. The total number of cargo theft incidents fell from 3,854 in 2024 to 3,594 in 2025, yet the average value per incident rose from roughly $200,000 to nearly $275,000 over the same period.
Electronics accounted for 22 percent of all thefts last year.
Rising demand and shifting targets Organized crime groups have focused on shipments of servers, semiconductors, and related components used in data centers. The Financial Times reported last month that the black-market price of Nvidia’s RTX 6000 Pro workstation chip in China more than doubled since January.
Thieves have used computer intrusions, spoofed emails, and fraudulent pickups to divert loads. Industry participants have responded by deploying software to verify driver credentials and generative AI tools to monitor shipments.
Recent recoveries Last week, investigators recovered two trailers outside Chicago containing $1.3 million in data-center equipment, including $300,000 in copper wire reported stolen in Alabama and about $1 million in infrastructure components reported stolen in Florida.
In July 2025, a truck shipment managed by Ceva Logistics carrying roughly $15 million in semiconductors and Apple products was taken in Nevada; the empty trailer was later found in California. In December 2024, more than $7 million in Nvidia chips disappeared from a California warehouse before scheduled delivery to a San Jose facility.
Supply-chain risk management firm Overhaul stated that the rapid expansion of AI infrastructure has created hardware shortages and new opportunities for smuggling to countries where U.S. export controls apply.
