Carnival Splendor Reminds Guests to Respect Lifou's Conservative Dress Code and Indigenous Customs

Carnival Cruise Line issued a notice to guests aboard Carnival Splendor ahead of the ship's June 2 stop in Lifou. The reminder directed passengers to follow local dress codes while ashore. The notice advised travelers to avoid wearing G-strings, thongs, monokinis and mankinis.

Topless sunbathing is also prohibited in Lifou. The dress code applies to beaches, markets, churches and community gathering spaces. Carnival Splendor was sailing on an eight-night itinerary that departed Sydney and included the Lifou call.

Carnival states on its website that Lifou is a tribal island populated by proud indigenous people whose culture is based on respect and in many cases is highly religious. The cruise line notes that communities in Lifou request visitors to wear traditional one-piece or full-piece swimsuits and refrain from wearing bikini or monokini-type swimsuits at the beach.

Carnival warned that failing to respect local customs in Lifou could affect future visits to the island. Guests were reminded that noncompliance could jeopardize Carnival’s ability to continue including Lifou on future itineraries. Carnival generally allows casual resort wear during the day.

The cruise line expects guests to ensure their clothing is respectful to fellow travelers and appropriate for the setting. Lifou is an island in New Caledonia in the South Pacific. Carnival’s swimwear policies have long been a topic of discussion among passengers online.
