Case Study Finds Temporary Functional Improvements, No Pathology Reversal, After High-Dose Psilocybin in Advanced Alzheimer’s Patient

An 80-year-old Japanese-American woman living with advanced Alzheimer’s disease showed improved speech, mobility, and independent dressing roughly 20 hours after receiving a 5-gram dose of Enigma strain mushrooms, according to a case study published in the journal Frontiers in Neuroscience.

The patient, who has had Alzheimer’s for nearly a decade and is under full-time care, typically speaks only in single syllables. After the dose she entered a prolonged sleep-like state.

Over the following days and weeks she regained urinary continence, walked more steadily, dressed without assistance, displayed greater emotional responsiveness, sustained social interaction, retrieved contextual memories, maintained working memory, and engaged in spontaneous conversation.

Researchers stated that the findings do not imply complete dementia reversal through magic mushrooms. They said psilocybin, the psychoactive ingredient in the mushrooms, may make some cognitive capacity transiently accessible under specific conditions.

The study added that the results should not be interpreted as a reversal of Alzheimer’s pathology. The report described the case as an observational description intended to generate hypotheses for future controlled investigation. It noted that more systematic investigation is warranted.

Psilocybin has drawn attention from scientists studying mental illnesses in recent years. Earlier work has linked the compound to sleep improvements in patients with chronic depression and to a marked reorganization of brain networks after administration.
