Cat Sleeping Locations Reflect Instinctive Safety and Comfort Needs
Animal behaviorist Michelle Bernstein explained why cats choose sinks, boxes, and elevated surfaces for rest. Cats sleep up to 16 hours daily and rotate spots based on temperature and perceived security.
thesouthafrican.comCats frequently select nap locations such as sinks, bookshelves, and laundry baskets rather than purchased beds. Michelle Bernstein, a forensic animal behaviorist with Switch4Good, told Newsweek that these choices stem from instinctive needs for safety and temperature regulation.
Bernstein said cats often seek elevated sleeping spots "for safety" because height gives them "a good vantage point" over their surroundings. This behavior allows monitoring of household activity including children, dogs, or sudden movement.
Cats also curl inside boxes or behind furniture. Bernstein stated enclosed spaces provide "safety, warmth, or stress relief" and can trap body heat while hiding the animal from perceived threats.
Sinks and tiled floors stay cooler than fabric. Bernstein noted cats regulate body temperature through contact surfaces, making porcelain or tile appealing in warmer conditions.
Positions in hallways or doorways let cats observe movement while resting. " Bernstein added that cats are most vulnerable when sleeping, so unusual positions can indicate trust. Sudden shifts toward hiding or isolation, however, may signal stress or illness, and owners should track appetite and grooming changes.
"Cats typically keep a stable everyday routine, so any change to that might be signaling that something is wrong," Bernstein said.
