U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers detained Sister Leticia “Letty” Ugboaja on June 28 as she walked to Our Lady of Sorrows Church in McAllen, Texas. The Catholic nun was released the same evening after members of Congress intervened.
Brenda Riojas, spokesperson for the Catholic Diocese of Brownsville, confirmed the detention and release to USA TODAY on July 1. The events occurred four days before the confirmation.
