CDC Reports 145 Cyclosporiasis Cases Across 17 States, No Deaths

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed 145 cases of cyclosporiasis across 17 states as of mid-June 2026, with all infections acquired inside the United States, Fox News reported. The parasite Cyclospora causes the illness. Its hallmark symptom is watery, often explosive diarrhea that can persist for weeks or months without treatment.
Additional symptoms include severe abdominal cramping, bloating, nausea, fatigue and significant weight loss. The official outbreak season runs from May 1 through August 31. Cases have appeared in states from Texas to Alaska.
New York recorded the highest numbers with between 31 and 80 cases, while Texas and Illinois each reported between 11 and 30 cases. Twenty of the 145 patients required hospitalization. No deaths have been reported.
Patients range in age from 5 to 86 years old, with a median age of 42. Women account for 61 percent of cases. The CDC, along with the Food and Drug Administration and state health officials, is investigating several multi-state clusters.
There is currently no evidence of a single multistate Cyclospora outbreak linking all cases, the CDC stated in its surveillance report. The agency advises anyone with symptoms to contact a healthcare provider for testing and treatment.
