CDC Confirms 1,645 Cyclosporiasis Cases Across 34 States Since May

An outbreak of cyclosporiasis has been reported in 34 U.S. states since May 1, 2026. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recorded 1,645 confirmed cases as of data published Tuesday, while more than 5,100 additional cases remain under review to determine domestic acquisition.

Business Insider reported that case counts are likely higher than current figures indicate. Michigan accounts for the largest number of infections. State health officials reported 3,309 cases as of Tuesday, far above the typical annual total of 40 to 50.

CDC data placed the state's confirmed cases between 501 and 900 for the period ending July 13, with 44 hospitalizations recorded as of July 9. Early state investigations point to lettuce or salads as a possible source, though no specific produce type, grower, or supplier has been identified. New York recorded between 161 and 300 cases in the same CDC period.

North Carolina reported 307 cases and 13 hospitalizations as of July 14. Ohio listed 364 cases and 46 hospitalizations through Thursday. Illinois reported 240 cases as of Wednesday morning, including 111 acquired domestically.

Connecticut confirmed 35 cases as of July 13, while New Jersey recorded 46 domestically acquired cases as of July 11. Florida reported 50 cases between May 1 and July 4. The remaining states each reported between 1 and 10 cases.

These include Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Iowa, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Nebraska, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Utah, Washington, and Wisconsin. Illinois, Kentucky, New Jersey, and Texas each fell in the 31-to-80 range, and Florida, Georgia, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, and Tennessee each fell in the 11-to-30 range.
