CDC Investigates 145 Cyclosporiasis Cases Across 17 States

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is investigating at least 145 cases of cyclosporiasis reported across 17 states in people who became ill between May 1 and June 16. Twenty people were hospitalized, and no deaths have been recorded as of July 2.

The infection is caused by the parasite Cyclospora cayetanensis, which spreads through contaminated food or water. It cannot be transmitted directly from person to person. Symptoms include watery diarrhea, loss of appetite, bloating, nausea, stomach cramps, fever, weight loss and muscle pain, and they typically appear about one week after exposure.

Michigan has recorded more than 170 cases across at least seven counties, well above its usual annual total of around 50. More than 300 cases have been reported in the state since June 22 as of July 3. New York has recorded 107 cases since May 1, compared with its typical annual range of 500 to 700.

The CDC stated there is no immediate evidence of a single multi-state outbreak linking all cases and is examining whether several potential sources of contamination may be involved. Officials are working with state health departments and the FDA on the investigation. The CDC advises washing all fresh produce thoroughly before eating and washing hands and kitchen surfaces.

People who develop symptoms after eating fresh produce should seek medical attention.
