skysports.comMartin O'Neill guided Celtic to the Scottish Premiership title and the Scottish Cup after serving as interim manager for most of the season. The 74-year-old took the role in October on a short-term basis after the previous manager resigned. He recorded 19 wins, two draws and two losses in 23 league matches.
Celtic defeated Dunfermline Athletic 3-1 in the Scottish Cup final at Hampden on Saturday. O'Neill said the victory completed a domestic double that he described as one of the club's sweetest given the season's circumstances.
"If the season was to start tomorrow, I couldn't do it," O'Neill told BBC Sport Scotland after the match. "But the season doesn't start tomorrow." He added that he plans to meet the owner within the next week and noted the club may seek a younger candidate.
Johnston said O'Neill had earned the right to take time to consider his future. Goalkeeper Viljami Sinisalo stated that O'Neill had instilled confidence and belief in the squad. Captain Callum McGregor said O'Neill had been fantastic and would likely remain involved in some capacity.
