Acting Director Russell Vought issued the order in a memorandum on Tuesday. Employees who agree to the move must begin reporting to the facility at 445 12th St.
SW on September 6. Those who decline the relocation or fail to respond by the July 14 deadline will be separated from the agency. The new headquarters previously housed the Federal Communications Commission and currently also houses the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation.
The building has space for about 550 employees, roughly half the bureau's current workforce of approximately 1,100. A limited number of employees have been exempted from the requirement, though the agency has not explained the criteria. The CFPB has not publicly commented on the notices.
The bureau's employee union described the order as a de facto workforce reduction, stating that the requirement is likely to prompt many employees to resign rather than move to Washington.
