Chain-Reaction Crash on Jalisco Highway Kills Nine, Injures About Ten

A chain-reaction crash involving three tractor-trailers on the highway connecting Guadalajara and Tepic in Jalisco, Mexico, killed nine or ten people and injured about ten others on Sunday, according to Mexico’s Army, Air Force, National Guard, and Nayarit authorities.
The Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection of Nayarit reported 10 deaths while Mexico’s Army, Air Force and National Guard stated nine people died. Two of those killed were minors.
About 10 people were injured overall. The crash began when two tractor-trailers collided in a rear-end collision, causing a line of vehicles to stop. A third tractor-trailer then suffered brake failure and slammed into the stopped vehicles as emergency crews responded, according to New York Post reported.
Four Americans suffered minor injuries and were transported to Arboledas Hospital in Guadalajara by private ambulance. Two National Guard members suffered serious injuries and were taken to a hospital in Guadalajara. Three private vehicles and two tractor-trailer trucks were completely destroyed by fire.
Two other private vehicles and one National Guard Dodge Charger sustained material damage. Firefighters extinguished the blaze. The driver of the tractor-trailer was detained by the National Guard. Videos circulating on social media showed vehicles engulfed in flames along the highway with plumes of black smoke.
