One woman told BBC Panorama that her onscreen husband raped her and threatened her with an acid attack. A second woman said she informed both Channel 4 and the production company before broadcast about being allegedly raped by her onscreen husband, but her episodes were still aired.
4 stated in a Monday statement that it was presented with the allegations in April and understands the accused contributors have denied them. The broadcaster said it cannot comment on or disclose details of the allegations due to privacy and duty of care obligations.
The channel said it believes that when contributor welfare concerns were raised through existing protocols, prompt and appropriate action was taken based on information available at the time. Channel 4 strongly refutes any claim that it failed in its duty of care.
Dogra, chief executive of Channel 4, said the wellbeing of contributors is of paramount importance. She stated that when concerns about contributor welfare were raised, Channel 4 acted quickly, appropriately, and sensitively based on the information available at the time.
The show is produced for Channel 4 by independent production company CPL. Channel 4 said MAFS UK operates under comprehensive welfare protocols including background checks, a code of conduct, and daily contributor check-ins with a specialist welfare team.
