espn.co.ukChelsea captain Millie Bright announced her retirement from football with immediate effect, citing an ankle injury that has kept her out since February. The 32-year-old defender made 294 appearances for Chelsea after joining from Doncaster Belles in 2015.
She won eight Women's Super League titles with the club, including six in a row between 2020 and 2025, along with six FA Cups and four League Cups.
Her decision comes as Chelsea sits six points behind leaders Manchester City with two Women's Super League games remaining, after being knocked out of the Champions League quarter-finals by Arsenal but winning the League Cup and reaching the FA Cup semi-finals.
"Representing Chelsea over the last 12 years has been everything to me, but I'm now ready to say goodbye to playing football," Bright said.
"I've given all I can, and I never wanted to fight for any other badge. It is now time, and I'm ready to go into a new era. " Bright retired from international duty in October, having earned 88 caps for England over a nine-year spell.
She started all six matches for England in their Euro 2022 victory and wore the captain's armband in the 2023 World Cup final. The defender's contract with Chelsea ends in the summer, and the injury contributed to her choice to retire now. She withdrew from the Euro 2025 squad, stating she was not able to give 100% physically and mentally, as younger defenders like Maya le Tissier, Esme Morgan and Lotte Wubben-Moy progressed with England.
Bright has been Chelsea's captain since 2023. Her retirement marks the end of a career where she became one of the most influential figures in English women's football, leading the Lionesses to their first major trophy in 2022 and to the World Cup final in 2023.
