The 80,000-gallon tank, which held white liquor used in paper production, was about 60 percent full at the time. Nine workers suffered chemical burns and other injuries ranging from critical to minor and were taken to area hospitals.
Battalion Chief Mike Gorsuch said the incident is stable but remains in the recovery phase. Cowlitz 2 Fire & Rescue Chief Scott Goldstein stated that the number of fatalities is undetermined and that some personnel are still missing. One firefighter was treated and released after being injured at the scene.
Hospitals in Longview and Portland, including PeaceHealth St. John Medical Center and the Legacy Oregon Burn Center, are treating patients from the incident.
Investigation The cause of the rupture is unknown.
Authorities said there is no immediate threat to the public and urged residents to avoid the area while recovery and investigation continue.
