Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice was released from jail Tuesday after completing a 30-day sentence for a probation violation tied to a prior car crash. Rice had knee surgery before reporting and is expected to rejoin the team for training camp.
ESPNKansas City Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice was released from jail on Tuesday after serving a 30-day sentence for violating probation terms connected to a car crash that injured multiple people. Rice, 26, had been booked into the facility on May 19 after testing positive for THC. He left the jail quickly, avoiding questions from waiting reporters before entering a waiting vehicle.
Rice underwent knee surgery about a week before beginning his sentence to address inflammation caused by debris in his right knee. A judge approved treatment at a hospital during his time in custody. Rice missed the Chiefs' voluntary offseason workouts and mandatory minicamp that ended last week.
Chiefs coach Andy Reid said he expects Rice to report on time for training camp at the end of July. Reid noted that team trainers had coordinated with Rice on his rehabilitation while he served his sentence. "Rick has talked to him more than what I have, just making sure that everything was set there where he could do some rehab with it and still do the time that he needed to take care of," Reid said.
The Chiefs are relying on Rice to bolster an offense that finished 6-11 last season. In three seasons, Rice has caught 156 passes for 1,797 yards and 14 touchdowns while helping the team win the Super Bowl following the 2023 season. Rice has dealt with suspensions and injuries that limited him to 28 games played across those seasons.
Reid said the team will focus on getting Rice up to speed once he returns. "We're moving forward as normal as we go here," Reid said.
