Two Japanese nationals employed by the Fuji Electric group were arrested in mid-June and late June after being detained in the Chinese city of Dalian in May, Japanese government officials said Wednesday. The men, held on May 18 and May 25 respectively, face charges related to smuggling banned goods under Chinese law, with proceedings expected to occur in China.
The detainees are suspected of violating China’s regulations governing rare earth exports.
Japanese officials conducted consular visits with both men and confirmed that neither has health problems. Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara told a news conference Wednesday that the government will maintain contact with the two nationals and related parties.
“The government will keep contact with the two Japanese nationals and related parties, and respond appropriately from the standpoint of protecting Japanese citizens overseas,” Kihara said.
He declined to comment further, noting that the case remains under investigation.
