China accused the United States on Thursday of distorting facts and smearing its political system. S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Rubio spoke during a Senate subcommittee meeting in Washington on Wednesday.

He said censorship could not erase the memory of Beijing's 1989 Tiananmen crackdown. "No amount of censorship can erase the past," Rubio stated on June 3, 2026. On June 4, 1989, the Chinese government sent troops and tanks to crush protests calling for political reform in and around Beijing's Tiananmen Square.

The death toll from the crackdown remains unknown. Discussion of the 1989 Tiananmen events is censored in mainland China. China's statement on Thursday directly addressed Rubio's comments from the previous day.
