China Investigates EV Makers After Owners Report Range Loss Following Software Updates
Chinese authorities summoned more than eight electric vehicle manufacturers and placed three under investigation after owners reported battery range reductions of up to 125 miles and longer charging times following over-the-air software updates. The probe centers on what owners describe as "battery locking," in which peak charge levels and power output are limited.
jamestown.orgChinese authorities have launched an investigation into electric vehicle manufacturers after vehicle owners reported significant reductions in driving range and increased charging times following software updates. On Saturday, CnEVPost cited an April post by China Central Television on the Weibo social media platform that detailed owner complaints of battery degradation after over-the-air updates.
The authorities summoned more than eight EV makers and placed three of them under investigation, the CCTV report said. Owners have described instances of "battery locking," in which companies reportedly limit peak charge and power outputs through software changes.
The reported range loss reached approximately 200 kilometers, or 125 miles. Following the April report, lists of brands allegedly summoned by authorities began circulating. The lists included Tesla and BYD, according to the CnEVPost report. Both companies denied the claims.
NIO also denied being part of the list.
Tesla recorded a 36 percent year-over-year increase in April sales in China. BYD's sales in the Chinese domestic market fell nearly 16 percent in April. The company has stated it can continue expanding without entering the U.S. market. Chinese-made EVs face a de facto ban in the United States.
The probe focuses on changes to battery parameters implemented via software updates. Authorities continue to examine the practices of the manufacturers involved. No further details on the specific companies under formal investigation have been released.
