China Pledges Support for Myanmar's New Government and Anti-Scam Efforts

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi concluded a five-day trip to Southeast Asia by meeting with Min Aung Hlaing, Myanmar’s junta leader-turned-president, in Naypyidaw on Saturday. Wang stated that China firmly supports Myanmar in safeguarding its national sovereignty, security and territorial integrity, according to a Chinese foreign ministry statement.
Support Wang noted that this year marks the first year of Myanmar’s new government and encouraged both sides to carry forward their traditional friendship and open up new prospects for bilateral relations. China expressed willingness to maintain high-level exchanges with Myanmar and strengthen strategic coordination.
China also pledged to help Myanmar’s new government engage more with multilateral platforms and eradicate telecom scam operations.
was sworn in as president earlier this month after Myanmar’s military-dominated legislature elected him on April 3. Myanmar has been in civil war since February 2021, when the military overthrew the elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi and detained its leaders. A recent amnesty deal in Myanmar included freeing Win Myint and reducing Aung San Suu Kyi’s prison term.
