China Says Political and Security Talks With Canada to Resume
Beijing announced that high-level political and security talks with Canada will restart after a decade-long gap. The statement followed a visit by China's top diplomat to Ottawa that ended on May 29, 2026.
cicnews.comChina's foreign ministry said on Saturday that high-level political and security talks with Canada would resume, marking the first such visit by a Chinese foreign minister in ten years. The ministry quoted the diplomat as telling Canadian officials that bilateral relations have been fully restored and that economic and trade concerns have been addressed.
The statement also noted plans to restart consultations on political and security issues at the foreign ministry level.
Ties between the two countries deteriorated after Canada's 2018 arrest of a Huawei executive, which prompted Chinese retaliation. Further strain came from Canadian allegations of Chinese election interference in 2019 and 2021, claims Beijing rejected.
The ministry acknowledged past difficulties but said exchanges across fields have now been restored. Beijing reduced some duties on Canadian goods this year, while Ottawa agreed to import tens of thousands of Chinese electric vehicles under preferential tariffs.
Bilateral trade reached nearly $90 billion in 2025, up 4.9 percent from the previous year, according to University of Alberta analysis. Canadian exports to China rose 13.8 percent during the same period. Canadian officials stated they aim to increase exports to China by 50 percent before 2030.
