China tested an intercontinental-range submarine-launched ballistic missile on July 6, firing it from a nuclear-powered submarine. South China Morning Post reported that the missile traveled about 7,300 km before landing near the Solomon Islands in the South Pacific. Analysts believe the launch originated from a Type 094 Jin-class nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine.
The test marked the first publicly disclosed long-range submarine-based missile firing by the PLA Navy since 1982. Only five nations have conducted such tests: the United States, Russia, Britain, France and China. These countries are also the permanent members of the UN Security Council.
Beijing described the test as a routine part of annual military training and stated that relevant countries had been informed in advance.
