Chinese models processed a record 58% of tokens used by US firms on OpenRouter, the platform that routes developer queries across models from multiple providers and serves as a gauge of real-world adoption. The share has tripled since mid-January, and the models first overtook American models on the platform in March.
Chinese models briefly reached 63% during the first week of July. At the start of 2025 Chinese models held less than 10% of usage while US models held about 80%. DeepSeek has become the most popular choice among American firms in recent months.
