Chinese Official Calls for Strengthening Education of Tibetan Buddhist Personnel

Li Ganjie, head of the Communist Party’s United Front Work Department and a member of the Politburo, made the statement during a trip to Tibetan areas in western China, according to state news agency Xinhua.
The inspection tour took place from April 18 to 22, 2026. Li visited religious organizations and study institutions in the Tibetan autonomous prefectures of Gansu and Sichuan provinces.
stated that Tibetan Buddhism must be guided to adapt to socialist society, in line with the Sinicisation of religion and strengthening the rule of law in religious affairs. He urged Tibetan Buddhist groups to implement the party’s religious policies and improve monastery management.
>"We must strengthen the education, training and management of representatives of Tibetan Buddhism, guiding religious figures to safeguard national unity and ethnic solidarity," Li said.
emphasized the need for religious schools to cultivate high-level talent proficient in both Tibetan Buddhist doctrines and Chinese culture. He also urged local authorities to promote a new unity law to ethnic minority groups. Similar calls have been made by other senior officials, including President Xi Jinping. The focus on training monks is described as crucial to the Sinicisation of religion.
