Christian Eriksen Suffers Second On-Field Collapse, Undergoes Further Heart Tests

Christian Eriksen collapsed on the pitch during Denmark's international friendly against Ukraine on Sunday in Odense. The 34-year-old midfielder clutched his chest with both hands in the 65th minute before falling to the ground. Eriksen was briefly unconscious but regained consciousness quickly.

He walked off the field himself to a waiting ambulance while Danish and Ukrainian players formed a protective ring around him. A chant of "Eriksen, Eriksen" rose from the crowd during treatment. The referee abandoned the match in the 79th minute after consulting both sets of coaches and players.

Denmark led 2-1 at the time. Players from both teams later formed a circle around the coaches before walking the pitch to applause. "Christian Eriksen is conscious and is doing well under the circumstances," the Danish Football Federation said in a statement.

Team doctor Morten Boesen added that Eriksen left the field on his own and that the implanted defibrillator appeared to be functioning. " Eriksen is the second time he has collapsed while playing for Denmark.

He suffered cardiac arrest during a European Championship match against Finland in Copenhagen on June 12, 2021, and was fitted with an Implantable Cardioverter-Defibrillator afterward. He returned to professional play 259 days later and currently plays for Wolfsburg under a contract running through the 2026-27 season.

"We are all with you, Christian," the Ukrainian national team posted on Instagram.

Eriksen asked Boesen to tell teammates he was okay and remains in contact with hospital staff. Neither Denmark nor Ukraine qualified for the 2026 World Cup.
