Christopher Nolan's 'The Odyssey' Scheduled to Open July 17

Director Christopher Nolan's film "The Odyssey" is scheduled to open in theaters July 17. " The production is the first feature film shot entirely on IMAX film. The format delivers image quality up to three times higher than digital cameras, but each magazine holds only 2.5 to 3 minutes of footage and the cameras are loud enough to disrupt dialogue recording.

Nolan's team and IMAX developed a sound-muffling housing described as a blimp the size of a coffin and weighing more than 300 pounds. Special steel plating was added to dollies to support the rig, and a mirror system was installed to allow closer eyelines during dialogue scenes.

CBS News reported that post-production took place at FotoKem in Burbank, California, the last lab in the world producing 70 millimeter prints.

Negative assembly technician Ron Juarez spliced every cut by hand. Nolan said there are thousands of cuts in the film. Lab color timer Lance Spindler assigned numerical values to adjust color for each shot of the final print.

Scenes screened at the Vista Theatre in Los Angeles included a wooden horse being dragged toward Troy and a battle in which Odysseus fights giants. Nolan told correspondent Scott Pelley that theaters with giant screens remain part of both the history and future of cinema because they preserve the communal experience of watching a film together.
