Civil Rights Groups Plan August 28 March on Washington for Voting Rights

The National Action Network is leading a march on Washington scheduled for August 28, 2026, titled March on Washington 2026: Defend the Vote. Martin Luther King III and Arndrea Waters King are participating. 's I Have a Dream speech at the Lincoln Memorial.

Martin Luther King III stated that defending the vote means defending the foundation of democracy and that sixty-three years after his father stood at the Lincoln Memorial, participants are called to march again in action. Supreme Court struck down Louisiana's congressional map and substantially rewrote Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act. Alabama judges upheld a redistricting process that will eliminate one of the state's two majority-Black districts for the 2026 midterm elections.

The Trump administration has pursued new proof-of-citizenship requirements for voting and proposed restrictions on mail-in ballots that would give the Department of Homeland Security and other agencies access to state voter lists.

Federal judges have blocked both proposals. Additional participants include U.S. Representative Yvette Clarke, chair of the Congressional Black Caucus, the Drum Major Institute, the American Federation of Teachers, the American Federation of Government Employees, the NAACP, the National Council of Negro Women, the National Urban League, the League of United Latin American Citizens, and the Working Families Party.
