The Cleveland Browns released cornerback Dom Jones with a failed physical designation and signed cornerback Damarri Mathis on July 21, 2026. The team announced both roster moves on its official X account the same day. Jones appeared in eight games for the Browns during the 2025 NFL season and recorded five tackles, primarily contributing on special teams with limited reserve cornerback duty.
The 26-year-old Georgia native entered the league as an undrafted free agent out of Colorado State and was heading into his second NFL season.
Mathis, a 27-year-old cornerback from Lakeland, Florida, brings experience from three seasons with the Denver Broncos between 2022 and 2024. Selected in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL Draft out of the University of Pittsburgh, he started 11 games as a rookie and finished with 65 tackles and seven pass breakups that year.
He started six of 17 games in 2023, appeared in 43 total NFL games with 18 starts through 2024, and did not play in 2025. The 5-foot-11, 195-pound defender now joins a Browns secondary that includes starters Denzel Ward and Tyson Campbell. com reported that Mathis could compete for a roster spot during training camp in Berea, Ohio, which begins next week.
