CM Punk defeated Sami Zayn for the Undisputed WWE Championship in the main event of Monday Night Raw in Chicago, Fox News reported. Punk made his return to the program and pinned Zayn to end the challenger's nine-day title reign. Zayn had been scheduled to face Cody Rhodes.
Gunther attacked Rhodes at the start of the show, leaving Zayn without an opponent until officials informed him of a replacement. Punk entered to a raucous crowd and won the match. After the loss, Zayn delivered an emotional promo backstage.
Zayn said, breaking down in tears. Earlier, Rhodes had defeated Jey Uso on Friday Night SmackDown to regain the No. 1 contender spot. Rhodes then booked a triple-threat match at Night of Champions against Zayn and Gunther but was pinned clean by Zayn at the event.
Gunther's attack prevented Rhodes from challenging for the title on Raw. With less than a month before SummerSlam, Punk is positioned to enter U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis as champion, Fox News reported.
