Coalition Allocates $60 Million for Four Bundibugyo Ebola Vaccine Candidates
The Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations has committed $60 million to advance four investigational vaccines against the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola virus now spreading in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The funding supports candidates using mRNA and viral-vector platforms already tested against related filoviruses.

Officials said response efforts are struggling to keep pace with transmission as of 10 July 2026.
Each uses a different validated platform: mRNA for Moderna, ChAdOx viral vector for Oxford, and VSV viral vector for IAVI and Public Health Vaccines. Developers have accumulated safety data from prior work on Zaire Ebola, Sudan and Marburg vaccines. Officials said this experience increases the likelihood that safe and effective Bundibugyo vaccines can be produced.
Oxford and Moderna candidates could enter early human testing as soon as next month. IAVI and Public Health Vaccines candidates may begin trials later this year because of more complex manufacturing requirements. Gavi has allocated $40 million from its First Response Fund to help manufacturers prepare production capacity ahead of any guaranteed market.
The combined CEPI and Gavi funds are intended to shorten the path from early research through emergency-use listing and eventual stockpile inclusion.
CEPI stated it is also searching for additional vaccine candidates and Phase I trial sites across Africa while engaging regulators on approval pathways. The organization called for $2.5 billion in new investment to enable responses to future outbreaks within 100 days.
