Cobolli Defeats de Minaur to Reach Wimbledon Quarterfinals

Flavio Cobolli defeated Alex de Minaur 7-5, 7-6(4), 6-3 in the Wimbledon fourth round on July 6. On his first match point, Cobolli hit a 135 mph first serve that landed on the line. He then performed a Cristiano Ronaldo-style celebration that prompted a "Siuuu" chant from the crowd.

Cobolli said he will cheer for Portugal against Spain at the World Cup because of Ronaldo. The Italian had used a surfing celebration borrowed from Matheus Cunha in his previous match. His quarterfinal opponent is Arthur Fery, the 23-year-old British player who grew up five minutes from the All England Club.

Cobolli's grandfather secured a new house in Wimbledon village after the win extended the team's stay. Taylor Fritz defeated Alexander Bublik 7-6(1), 6-4, 6-4 in 108 minutes to reach his third straight Wimbledon quarterfinal. Fritz is the fourth American man in the past 40 years to achieve that feat, joining Pete Sampras, Andy Roddick and Andre Agassi.

He improved to 11-2 on grass this season and holds 47 grass-court match wins this decade, the most on the men's tour since 2020. Fritz said it feels good to have a smooth match after a tough one in the previous round. Jasmine Paolini defeated Alexandra Eala 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 in the women's fourth round.

Nineteen-year-old Formula One driver Kimi Antonelli watched Paolini's match from the Royal Box. Defending champion Jannik Sinner is scheduled to play Jan-Lennard Struff on July 7 for a semifinal spot. Alexander Zverev's round-of-16 match against Jiri Lehecka was suspended at 8:41 p.m.
