NewsweekA snap of unusually cold weather is bringing snow, frost and freezing temperatures to parts of the western United States. The National Weather Service issued multiple alerts across at least five states late Wednesday. Weather advisories were issued late Wednesday impacting Idaho, Montana, Oregon, California and Nevada.
A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for the Absaroka and Beartooth Mountains through Thursday morning. Light snow and gusty winds up to 35 mph are expected along the Beartooth Highway. Frost advisories and freeze warnings are in place for parts of the eastern Magic Valley and Snake River Plain in Idaho.
Temperatures are expected to drop to between 28 F and 32 F in parts of the eastern Magic Valley and Snake River Plain. Frost advisories cover the Klamath Basin and Modoc County regions in Oregon and northern California until Thursday morning.
Northern and south central Elko County in Nevada is under a frost advisory. Lows between 33 F and 37 F are expected in northern and south central Elko County. Temperatures could dip as low as 30 F in Lemhi County in western Montana.
Most advisories are set to expire between early morning and mid-morning Thursday. Frost formation is likely across a wide area with some locations dropping below freezing for several hours overnight. Sensitive crops and outdoor vegetation could be killed or damaged.
Unprotected plants during the early growing season could be harmed. Outdoor plumbing in colder pockets faces risk. Snow will add to hazards in higher elevations. Travel through mountain passes such as the Beartooth Highway could be impacted by slippery conditions and reduced visibility.
