Colombians Vote Sunday in Presidential Election

Colombians go to the polls this Sunday in a presidential election that follows Gustavo Petro’s 2022 victory. The contest pits candidates aligned with the current government against a divided opposition.

Bonilla, deputy director of the Peace and Reconciliation Foundation, said the vote occurs amid global political tension and Colombia’s first alternation of power in recent cycles. Sergio Guzmán, director of Colombia Risk Analysis, stated that public discontent centers on security, corruption, the economy, and the health system.

The campaign has been marked by emotional appeals rather than policy debates, according to both analysts. Bonilla noted the absence of candidate debates and the influence of social media algorithms that reinforce existing views.

Polls cited by Guzmán show Iván Cepeda leading in voting intention, followed by Abelardo de la Espriella, with Paloma Valencia and several centrist candidates trailing. Guzmán said De la Espriella’s more confrontational style has drawn support away from traditional conservative options.

Bonilla stated that traditional political parties are the main losers in the race. She added that some voters seek representation outside established structures, while Guzmán observed that Petro’s project created an ideological identification for part of the electorate that had not existed previously.

Security and corruption rank among the top voter concerns. Guzmán said some voters link the government’s “total peace” policy to the strengthening of armed groups. Bonilla noted that right-leaning candidates have emphasized militarization of cities as a response.

On the economy, Guzmán reported declining confidence among international investors due to government policies. Bonilla said some citizens report they have not fared badly under Petro, while others express frustration. U.S. President Donald Trump were used in domestic messaging by the governing camp.
