Comedians Roast President at Kennedy Center Twain Prize Event

Comedians gathered at the Kennedy Center yesterday to present the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor to Bill Maher. The building displayed a large tarp across its facade that blocked the location where the president's name had been added and later removed under a court order.

Onstage, performers including Jay Leno, Louis C.K., and Whitney Cummings directed remarks at the president while praising Maher's record of criticizing both political sides. Woody Harrelson told the audience the award was given "ironically at the Trump Kennedy Center" before adding that the name issue had been addressed.

Cummings joked about a possible change to the center's fall schedule under the president's influence. She also referenced an unused joke about the president missing the event and said she had been told not to use it. Cummings stated that comedians are not scared of people who bully and praised Maher for the same approach.

Matt Friend, a comedian known for impersonating the president, interrupted Maher's acceptance speech by repeating insults the president had posted earlier on social media. The exchange highlighted an ongoing public disagreement between Maher and the president.

The Kennedy Center announced Maher as the recipient after an earlier report that the administration had denied the selection. Maher had criticized the president on his television program for years and later attended a White House dinner with him. The ceremony took place against a backdrop of leadership changes and programming shifts at the center that followed the president's involvement.

A June 19 court filing indicated trustees will consider three options next month, including full closure, partial closure, or phased work that keeps some programming in place. Staff members have said they are waiting for decisions on both the building's future and their own positions.
