Commanders to retire No. 44 worn by Hall of Famer John Riggins
The Washington Commanders will retire the jersey number of Hall of Fame running back John Riggins. The honor comes more than 40 years after Riggins scored a touchdown in the franchise's first Super Bowl victory.

The Washington Commanders will retire the No. 44 worn by Hall of Fame running back John Riggins. The ceremony will take place during a home game against the team Riggins played for from 1976 to 1985. Riggins remains the franchise's all-time leading rusher with 7,742 yards and ranks second with 85 touchdowns. His 79 rushing touchdowns stand 33 ahead of the next player on the list.
performance Riggins earned Super Bowl MVP honors after rushing for 166 yards in a 27-17 win over the Miami Dolphins following the 1982 season. His 43-yard touchdown run on fourth-and-1 gave Washington a 20-17 lead with 10 minutes remaining. During the four-game playoff run that year, Riggins set an NFL postseason record with 610 rushing yards.
In 1984, at age 35 years and three months, he became the oldest player in league history to rush for more than 1,000 yards.
