The Democratic Republic of Congo recorded at least 930 deaths from an Ebola outbreak in its eastern provinces as of Saturday. Health authorities confirmed 2,344 cases by that date, with 37 new deaths occurring in the 24 hours leading into Saturday. The outbreak was declared on May 15 and has spread across five provinces.
Ituri province has been the hardest hit. The Bundibugyo virus strain is responsible, and no approved vaccine or treatment is available for it. Authorities have recorded at least 12 attacks on health facilities and teams since mid-May.
These incidents have restricted response efforts in Ituri. Many health workers have walked off their jobs to protest lack of payment, and at least 36 infected health workers have died. The World Health Organization noted that 80 percent of new cases stem from unknown transmission chains.
Weekly averages show increases of 272 cases and 111 deaths. As of the latest report, 724 patients remain in isolation and hospitals. The Ministry of Health said it is intensifying response efforts in affected health zones.
Twenty-two new recoveries were recorded in a 24-hour period.
