Congo Ebola outbreak strains health workers with low pay and scarce supplies

Health workers in Mongbwalu are treating patients during an active Ebola outbreak while reporting limited pay and rest. The medical director of Mongbwalu General Referral Hospital stated that compensation has been minimal despite continuous shifts and late-night case notifications.

The outbreak began in the mining area of Mongbwalu in Ituri province and remained undetected for several weeks before confirmation on May 15. Mining conditions, including crowded living areas and limited health protocols, have contributed to transmission through contact with bodily fluids.

Case numbers and resources Congolese authorities have confirmed 452 cases including 82 deaths. On one recent day, 71 new cases were recorded, which officials described as a sign of active community transmission. The rare Bundibugyo strain has no approved vaccines or treatments, so workers are addressing symptoms with limited supplies.

Masks, gloves, boots, and medications were initially scarce as agencies worked to deliver aid.

Working conditions A nurse at the Mongbwalu hospital described eating only once a day during the first two weeks of the response. The medical director noted that some alerts cannot be investigated due to insufficient travel resources. The World Health Organization director-general on Friday announced a $518 million plan to address the outbreak, citing the need for political commitment and community engagement.

Conflict with a Rwanda-backed rebel group and attacks by Islamist militants have further complicated response efforts.
