Convicted killer charged in death of 14-year-old girl after sentence commuted

Federal prosecutors have charged a 51-year-old man with two counts of possession with intent to distribute cocaine resulting in death, transporting a minor for criminal sexual activity, and conspiring to destroy evidence. The charges stem from the March 13 disappearance and March 19 death of McKenna Wendel near Brookings, South Dakota, about 60 miles north of Sioux Falls.

An indictment obtained by ABC News states the girl died from a suspected cocaine overdose.

Investigation and additional charges A second man, Jon Rogness, 38, was also charged with conspiracy and accessory counts in an alleged cover-up. The 51-year-old defendant was already in custody on an unrelated DUI charge when the body was found. FBI special agent Gene Kowel described the case during a Thursday press conference as "horrific" and "heart-wrenching," noting that investigations involving children are among the most tragic.

Prior conviction and release The defendant had been serving a 240-year sentence handed down in 1994 for fatally stabbing a man during a 1993 fight. His sentence was commuted in 2023, making him eligible for parole. South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley said the commutation decision rested entirely with the governor at the time.

The slain child was listed among guests at a June 2024 parole hearing, though it remains unclear when the defendant was released.
