lamag.comCosm, a venue operator, plans to screen 'Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone' in an immersive format at its location in Inglewood, California, beginning next Thursday. The screening utilizes an 87-foot LED curved screen that extends film imagery around the dome while the movie plays in a rectangular format.
In certain scenes, the screen shifts dynamically. The format aims to create an effect where audience members feel immersed in the film's action, such as during Quidditch matches where the character Harry Potter, played by Daniel Radcliffe, flies on a broom.
Page Six Hollywood viewed a completed version of the adapted film yesterday, marking the first such showing.
Creating the immersive format takes about a year, according to Neil Carty, head of Cosm studios. Warner Bros. was involved in the production as part of a multi-year deal providing access to its films. Alexis Scalice, vice president of business development and entertainment at Cosm, stated that the studio's involvement was due to the value of the intellectual property.
This screening represents the third major studio film adapted for Cosm's venues. The company formed in 2020 and opened its first venue in the Hollywood Park area of Inglewood in 2024, near SoFi Stadium. The Intuit Dome opened across the street a few months later as part of area revitalization efforts.
Cosm opened a second venue in Dallas in 2024.
This year, the company plans to open additional venues in Atlanta and Detroit, and it recently broke ground in Cleveland. In 2024, Cosm raised $250 million from investors including Marc Lasry, former owner of the Milwaukee Bucks; Dan Gilbert, current owner of the Cleveland Cavaliers; and David Blitzer, who co-owns the New Jersey Devils and Philadelphia 76ers and holds a minority stake in the Washington Commanders.
Hotel magnate Steve Wynn is also an investor. The venues initially focused on sports broadcasts, displaying games across the large LED screens. The shift to films like 'Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone' tests audience interest in immersive movie experiences in Southern California.
