A West Virginia couple has lived in a 500-square-foot off-grid cabin for about ten years. They report that the small space has required changes to hobbies, hosting, and daily routines. The couple says the arrangement has lowered their bills and increased time outdoors.
The couple runs small businesses and maintains hobbies that include backpacking, caving, mountain biking, disc golf, gaming, reading, painting, and playing Dungeons & Dragons. They also keep three dogs, one cat, and one rabbit. Limited storage has led them to give away unused items such as board games, yarn, and a guitar rather than keep them in the cabin.
The couple gave up plans for a styled interior in favor of comfort and utility. They replaced a kitchen chair with an ergonomic office chair, swapped a leather sofa for a loveseat to create floor space for yoga and strength training, and installed a large wood stove and solar system components. They also stopped storing seasonal holiday decorations due to limited space.
The open layout keeps the cabin warm and bright but leaves no separate areas for different audio or video activities. When one person needs quiet for work calls, the other takes the dogs outside or works in the garden. The couple says they often wear headphones or keep the house quiet, especially when the other is sleeping.
Guests can use a loft bed or pull-out loveseat, but the couple notes that visitors must accept close quarters. As early risers, they say they have had to move quietly in the mornings to avoid waking overnight guests. The couple states that the space constraints have helped them focus on activities they value most.
