The pair continued video calls for more than a year while separated by an eight-hour time difference.
China closed its borders in 2020 due to the pandemic, blocking Donohoe’s plan to teach English in Qingdao. The couple met at the airport for the first time and became engaged one week later.
They married on November 22, 2021, in a ceremony attended by Donohoe’s immediate family. A larger event with about 50 guests followed a month later. The couple now lives in Bury, Manchester, and has two children, ages two and four months. The children met their grandparents in China for the first time last month.
