Court to Hear Arrest Warrant Request for Former Army Commander Over Martial Law Allegations
A special counsel team filed an arrest warrant on July 11 for Kang Ho-pil, former head of the Army Ground Operations Command, over alleged involvement in discussions ahead of former President Yoon Suk Yeol's martial law declaration. A special counsel team filed an arrest warrant Saturday for Kang Ho-pil, former head of the Army Ground Operations Command, over his alleged role in former President Yoon Suk Yeol's martial law declaration, Yonhap reported. The team, led by Kwon Chang-young, accused Kang of forming a situation room inside the command and ordering the assembly of a crisis response team along with all senior officers.
Kang is also suspected of participating in discussions for martial law prior to Yoon's declaration.
Kang has stated he had no prior knowledge of Yoon's plans and was not involved in the declaration. The warrant hearing is scheduled for Monday at the Seoul Central District Court. Three other former military commanders with alleged ties to the martial law declaration are already on trial.
They are Kwak Jong-keun, former commander of the Army Special Warfare Command; Lee Jin-woo, former head of the Capital Defense Command; and Yeo In-hyung, former head of the Defense Counterintelligence Command.
