Covenant Logistics completed two weeks of testing with a Tesla Semi that included loaded runs over the Tejon Pass section of I-5 in California. The company said it was amazed at the vehicle's performance and felt a level of confidence that was hard to match in a diesel truck. The test route covered the segment between Santa Clarita and the San Joaquin Valley known as the Grapevine.

That stretch reaches an elevation of 4,160 feet and is the highest point on I-5 in California. 6 miles, with the steepest portion, called Grapevine Hill, maintaining about a 6 percent grade for five miles. Covenant Logistics described the loaded Grapevine run as one of the most demanding real-world tests possible for any truck.

Northbound, the company noted that speed can drop quickly on the steep grade with a heavy load and that regaining momentum is challenging. Southbound, attention turns to braking and heat management. The company stated that regenerative braking on the electric vehicle handled most of the work on the descent, removing concerns about heat buildup that would apply to a conventional truck.

@SawyerMerritt reported the details of the completed evaluation and the company's statements on the route and vehicle performance.
