Cubs infielder makes between-the-legs throw on bunt play

A Chicago Cubs infielder executed a between-the-legs throw to retire a Houston Astros runner on a bunt attempt during a game at Wrigley Field on Saturday. The play took place in the top of the fifth inning of the Cubs' 3-0 loss to the Astros. The runner attempted a bunt single on the first pitch of the inning.

The infielder, a two-time Gold Glove winner, charged the ball and picked it up barehanded. With limited options due to the runner's speed, the infielder dragged his right leg behind him and threw the ball between his legs to first base. The first baseman completed the play by catching the throw for the out.

Similar plays in baseball history The throw recalled earlier plays by New York Mets pitcher Bartolo Colon and Chicago White Sox pitcher Mark Buehrle. Colon flipped a ball behind his back on a weak grounder, while Buehrle threw a ball through his legs after being hit by a comebacker.

The Cubs fell to 29-23 while the Astros improved to 22-31. m. ET.
