Cunnamulla State School Closed After Potential Mercury Exposure
Queensland authorities closed Cunnamulla State School on Tuesday while investigating reports that students brought a substance containing mercury to the campus. Several people were taken to hospital as a precaution and a building has been cordoned off.
A state school in south-west Queensland has been closed today as authorities investigate a potential mercury exposure. The Queensland Fire Department was called to Cunnamulla State School, 800 kilometres west of Brisbane, at about 2pm yesterday after reports that students had been exposed to a chemical. It is understood students brought the substance to school.
School staff removed the substance from the students and contacted council and health authorities, the Queensland Department of Education said. Several people were taken to hospital as a precaution. The Darling Downs Public Health Unit has notified the school and families of potential mercury exposure.
Those known to have been exposed have been advised to present to the local emergency department.
Mercury is a highly toxic heavy metal that can damage the brain, kidneys and nervous system. Exposure can occur through skin contact, inhaling fumes or ingestion. A Queensland Fire Department scientific crew is investigating and has cordoned off a building.
The Queensland Department of Education said it will continue to follow advice from Queensland Health, including preventing access to the affected area.
