Curtin Review: Interactive Programs Change Dementia Risk Factors More Than Standard Campaigns

New research from Curtin University indicates that nearly half of dementia cases could be prevented by addressing factors including physical inactivity, smoking, low education, poor sleep and social isolation. The findings were published in The Lancet Healthy Longevity after a review of public health campaigns and programs across eight countries.

The review found large-scale awareness efforts produced only small gains in knowledge and limited behavior change, while interactive approaches performed better.

Interactive approaches performed better at prompting habit changes. These included online education programs that outline practical steps for brain health, personalized risk assessments showing how individual lifestyles affect dementia probability, and community programs led by peer educators, health workers and local leaders.

Programs that incorporated culturally tailored content, familiar settings and realistic goal-setting achieved the strongest results in sustaining change.

Mario Siervo, a study author, stated that up to 45 percent of dementia cases are linked to modifiable factors such as lifestyle, health status and environment. A related Curtin-led study tracked nearly 500,000 adults for more than a decade. Participants with both low muscle strength and excess body fat, known as sarcopenic obesity, showed elevated dementia risk.

Obesity alone did not increase risk when muscle strength remained intact. Dr. Laura Bojarskaite of the University of Oslo noted that the review highlights how simply informing people produces little behavioral shift.
