Cypriots Vote in Parliamentary Election Focused on Corruption and Living Costs
Voters elected 56 lawmakers from 753 candidates on May 24. The outcome may shift support away from parties backing President Nikos Christodoulides.
Cypriots went to the polls on Sunday to elect 56 members of parliament from a record 753 candidates. More than 500,000 registered voters participated in the election, which is viewed as an indicator of support for President Nikos Christodoulides ahead of the 2028 presidential contest.
Three centrist parties that currently back the president—Diko, Dipa and EDEK—have shown weaker support in recent opinion polls. The right-wing DISY and Communist AKEL parties have also lost ground to newer groups.
Polls indicate gains for the far-right ELAM party and for newcomers ALMA and Volt. These parties campaigned on accountability and anti-corruption measures, issues listed among voters' top priorities. The election occurred amid ongoing concerns over living costs, housing affordability and migration.
Polls closed at 1500 GMT, with results expected around 1700 GMT. Christodoulides does not lead a political party and relies on legislative support from other groups. Some analysts have suggested possible post-election alliances with ELAM or DISY, though neither the president nor the parties have commented on future arrangements.
