An independent tribunal imposed the ban on the 26-year-old Czech player Monday after she declined an out-of-competition test at her home in December. The suspension runs through June 2030 and bars her from all ITF, WTA, ATP, Grand Slam and national association events.
Nbc NewsMarketa Vondrousova received a four-year suspension from professional tennis on June 22, 2026, after an independent tribunal ruled she had refused an anti-doping test without justification. The 26-year-old Czech player did not provide a sample when a doping control officer arrived at her home for an out-of-competition test at approximately 8 p.m. on December 3, 2025.
The tribunal reviewed Vondrousova’s claims of safety concerns and mental stress alongside testimony from the doping control officer and concluded the evidence offered no compelling justification. Her suspension runs until June 21, 2030. During that period she may not play in, coach at, or attend any events organized or sanctioned by the ITF, WTA, ATP, Grand Slams, or national associations.
Vondrousova won the Wimbledon women’s singles title in 2023, defeating Ons Jabeur in straight sets as the first unseeded player to claim the championship. She reached the French Open final in 2019, earned a silver medal at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, and attained a career-high ranking of world number six that year. She has won three WTA Tour singles titles and is currently ranked world number 122.
She has played only two matches on the WTA Tour in 2026 and withdrew from the Adelaide International in January due to a shoulder injury. International Tennis Integrity Agency chief executive Karen Moorhouse said testers carry identification at all times, players can verify identity through other means if unsure, and the gender of the testing witness always matches the player.
She added that unpredictable testing remains essential to protect clean sport.
Vondrousova’s lawyer, Jan Exner, said he will consult his client before deciding whether to appeal the decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport and will not speculate on next steps.
